Tamborine Against Blasting (TAB):
TAB is a non for profit local community group formed in order to gain a more equitable outcome for the people of Tamborine relating specifically to the Clutha Creek Sand Mine blasting approval, handed down by Logan City Council to the detriment of the local community and broader QLD economy.
What is a Key Resource Area (KRA) and who does it affect:
A KRA is imposed by the State in order to protect key resources from inappropriate development meaning the affected land owners within a 1000m radius of the plant boundary, will have little to no opportunity to develop their properties in the future and may find their properties significantly devalued as a result.
What does this mean for your family’s health:
Although TAB does not wish to bring people undue concern we feel it is within your best interest to know the possible health effects that may be associated with sand mining and the blasting process.
Blasting will force silica dust up into the atmosphere and enable it to travel over a greater distance thus affecting a larger area than just the KRA.
Silica dust is a pollutant by product from the sand mining process and even with limited exposure over a prolonged period can lead to silicosis, amongst other conditions.
Silicosis is a disease affecting the lungs similar to asbestosis and currently there is no medical cure.
Here are four things you can do:
Firstly, you should be aware of the problem and if you would like further information visit our website http://www.tamborineagainstblasting.com/
Secondly, you can ask your local councillor and State member why they would choose to protect a mine that has little to no economic benefit but significant economic and social cost.
Thirdly, you may wish become involved with TAB either through a small financial contribution and or donation of your time.
Finally, you can talk to as many people as possible about this issue as it will only be through popular opinion that we will sway those in power to act honourably.
